We are extremely fortunate to have as our guest speaker, Åsa Fanelli, who will be speaking to the group on “What You Should Think About Before Joining a Nonprofit Board

Joining a nonprofit board can be a rewarding experience and a great way of using your corporate skills to advance a cause that you are passionate about. However, as a volunteer it is also very time consuming and demanding. What are some of the questions you should ask yourself before joining a board in order to be sure that you will make a great board member? What are the actual responsibilities of a board member and are you expected to fundraise for the organization?  What type of nonprofit will be the best fit for you and how can you avoid some of the pitfalls by finding out the right information about the organization before committing to a board?

Come and learn more about what nonprofits are looking for when recruiting board members, hear about some of the challenges in board governance and find out more information to guide your decision making when thinking about joining a nonprofit board.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Åsa Fanelli, (pronounced “Osa”) is the founder and the Chief Strategist of IdeaLift Group, a boutique strategy consulting firm that works with organizations to provide key insights to boards and executives in board development, strategic planning, fundraising and other areas of nonprofit management.

Åsa brings over 20 years of broad-based leadership experience, both in the global corporate and nonprofit sectors. Most recently, Åsa served as CEO and President of Horizons for Homeless Children, a Boston-based nonprofit that provides high-quality early education and play for young homeless children.

Before joining Horizons, Åsa spent more than 15 years at EF Education First, a global company providing language education, cultural exchange, academic programs, and immersion travel with offices and schools spread across 52 countries. She held numerous leadership positions in business development, sales/ marketing and operations. While at EF, Åsa also served as head of Human Resources and Talent Management, overseeing recruitment, training and performance management for the North American EF offices. She was appointed to lead a global cross-company initiative where she created and facilitated leadership seminars and professional development trainings for managers in the US, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

Åsa graduated in Human Resources Management and Economics from University of Stockholm and has Boston University’s Fundraising Certificate Program as well as the Board Source Certificate of Nonprofit Board Consulting. She’s a member of The Boston Club, serving on the Nonprofit Board Committee, and also serves on Newton’s Advisory Council of Health and Human Services.
