Welcoming the Stranger is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering immigrants and newcomers through English as a Second Language (ESL), computer training, and U.S. citizenship classes. Our programs help adults gain confidence, skills, and opportunity while strengthening the broader community.
We are seeking committed, mission-driven individuals to join our Board of Directors.
Why Serve on Our Board?
As a Board Member, you will:
- Help shape the strategic direction of a growing nonprofit
- Support programs that promote education, inclusion, and civic participation
- Use your skills, experience, and networks to create lasting community impact
- Work collaboratively with a diverse group of volunteers, staff, and fellow board members
Board Member Responsibilities (At a Glance)
Board Members are expected to:
- Attend and actively participate in Board meetings
- Serve on at least one Board committee
- Stay informed about Welcoming the Stranger’s programs, finances, and goals
- Act as an ambassador for the organization in the community
- Participate in fundraising efforts and make a personally meaningful annual donation
- Support staff, volunteers, and fellow Board members
- Help identify future Board leaders
Who Should Apply?
We welcome individuals who:
- Believe in the mission of Welcoming the Stranger
- Are collaborative, reliable, and enthusiastic advocates
- Bring skills such as education, nonprofit leadership, finance, law, fundraising, technology, marketing, or community outreach
- Value diversity, equity, and inclusion
Previous board experience is helpful but not required.
Time Commitment
- Board meetings: [monthly]
