Position Description:
Avant Bard Theatre’s Board of Directors in collaboration with the Producing Partners supports the mission of the organization.

Job Title: Board of Directors (volunteer)
Location: Remote, Arlington, VA
Schedule: Flexible hours (avg. 5-10 weekly)
Key functions of the Board of Directors position include:
- Review and adoption of policies and programs that further the mission of Avant Bard.
- Review and approval of the annual budget.
- Work with Producing Partners, staff, contractors, and volunteers to produce the income required to meet the budgeting goals.
- Recognize that the board of directors’ partners with Avant Bard’s Producing Partners in carrying out its mission and programs, which exist to serve Avant Bard’s patrons.
- Attend regularly scheduled board meetings and be prepared to participate by reading materials prior to the meeting.
- Serve on at least one committee and actively participate in its work, and seriously consider serving on any task forces that the board establishes.
- Make an annual financial contribution during the fiscal year to Avant Bard that is meaningful and significant to the individual board member.
- Participate in fundraising events and secure the interest, service, and financial support of others who appreciate Avant Bard’s mission and programs.
- Propose candidates who will further Avant Bard’s work for election to the board of directors.
- Agree and adhere to Avant Bard’s conflict of interest and other policies and its bylaws.
- Ensure the confidentiality of all board and committee discussions.
- Get to know Avant Bard’s Producing Partners, staff, contractors, volunteers, participants, programs, and services.
- Support a culture of respectful dialogue and debate.

Desired, though not necessarily required, professional experience includes:
- Previous Board of Directors experience
- Theater experience
- Production experience
- Directing, designing, stage managing, and/or acting in
theatre productions

- A secondary degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
- Non-profit management experience
- A familiarity with racial, economic, and gender justice

The Board of Directors primarily works remotely apart from attending Avant Bard performances and receptions in Arlington, VA.
