BRCI Profile

The Bedford VA Research Corporation, Inc. (BRCI) is a stand-alone, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) Massachusetts non-profit corporation established in 2001 under the authority granted by Congress to find alternative funding for educational programs and innovative medical research for veterans. The impact of BRCI is felt by the over 19,000 veterans who receive health care and other support services through the Bedford VA Healthcare System.

BRCI works with non-VA funders and donors to support projects for 65 principal investigators at the VA Bedford Healthcare System with expertise in homelessness, mental health, reintegration, substance abuse and addiction, smoking cessation, suicide prevention, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), AlzheimerÕs and geriatrics, and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Training and support programs offered through the VA Bedford Healthcare system include entrepreneurship, workforce development, financial management skills and reintegration. Each program helps to heal veterans and has a direct and immediate impact on the well-being of those who served, their families, the community, and the caregivers. The more options we are able to provide, the greater the reach.Ê

BRCI serves in an administrative role and receives no financial support from the VA. All funds for operating expenses are derived from overhead charges that are levied on contracts, funds from other non-profits, donations, etc.

BRCI Mission

Our mission is to provide veterans with the opportunity to participate in educational programs and innovative research that support their health and well-being. We strive to facilitate and advance the education and research mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs with specific focus on the research and educational activities at the VA Bedford Healthcare System. By developing new partnerships and collaborating with foundations, corporations, universities, government agencies, and donors, we provide a clear and straightforward mechanism by which we can work with the VA Bedford Healthcare System to advance education programs and novel research to improve the lives of those who served as well as the general population.

What We Do

BRCI fulfills its mission of promoting and supporting research and education by providing direct support to Principal Investigators and their staff at the VA Bedford Healthcare System. We provide four essential services: contract/grant administration, human resources management, purchasing, and financial accounting.

What We Are Looking to Add

The Bedford VA Research Corporation, Inc. (BRCI) is currently looking for up to two new community board members with a passion for supporting veterans and the research and education conducted through the VA Bedford Healthcare System. We are particularly interested in discussing board membership with those who are veterans themselves and have strong business skills that will provide balance and a complimentary perspective. The Board is always comprised of representatives from the VA as well as members of the local community.

What We Expect

Board meetings are held quarterly. In between meetings, individual board members contribute their talents on an as-needed basis. Board members with financial backgrounds may be asked to serve on a Financial Oversight Subcommittee which meets quarterly.Ê No financial contribution is required, and no financial compensation is provided to board members.
